Is Step Angle Accuracy the Same as Positioning Accuracy?

Is Step Angle Accuracy the Same as Positioning Accuracy?

2026-10-09

No. They are related, but they are not the same thing.

This is a common misunderstanding in stepper motor applications.

1.What Is the Step Angle?

The step angle is the nominal angular movement produced by one full-step command.

For example, a stepper motor with a 1.8° step angle requires 200 full-step commands for one revolution.

The step angle mainly describes the motor’s basic movement resolution.

It answers the question:

→ How large is one commanded motor step?

But the nominal step angle does not guarantee that the rotor will stop at the exact theoretical position every time.

2.What Is Step Angle Accuracy?

Step angle accuracy describes the deviation between the motor’s actual step angle and its nominal step angle.

In simple terms:

→ The commanded step is 1.8°
→ The actual step may have a small angular deviation

This deviation can be influenced by:

  • Motor manufacturing tolerances
  • Magnetic characteristics
  • Load conditions
  • Current balance between phases
  • Driver performance

Step angle accuracy is mainly a motor-level characteristic.

3.What Is Positioning Accuracy?

Positioning accuracy describes the difference between the commanded target position and the actual position reached by the complete motion system.

It includes more than the motor itself.

The final result may also be affected by:

  • Mechanical backlash
  • Lead-screw or belt accuracy
  • Coupling and assembly errors
  • Friction and transmission resistance
  • Motor load and torque margin
  • Driver current control
  • Acceleration and deceleration
  • Thermal expansion
  • External vibration

That is why a motor can have a stable step angle while the complete machine still shows positioning deviation.

4.What About Repeatability?

Repeatability is another important concept.

It describes whether the system can return to the same position consistently after repeated movements.

A system may have:

  • Good repeatability but a fixed positioning offset
  • Poor repeatability caused by backlash or friction
  • High command resolution but limited actual accuracy

Therefore, resolution, accuracy and repeatability should not be treated as the same specification.

5.A Simple Way to Understand the Difference

You can think of the three concepts this way:

→ Step angle: How large each basic motor step is
→ Positioning accuracy: How close the actual position is to the target
→ Repeatability: How consistently the system returns to the same position

Increasing microstepping can improve command resolution and motion smoothness.

However, it does not automatically eliminate motor errors, mechanical backlash or transmission inaccuracies.

Final Conclusion

Step angle accuracy is a motor-level parameter. Positioning accuracy is a complete-system result.

When evaluating a stepper motor application, do not look only at the basic step angle.

Also evaluate:

  • Motor accuracy
  • Driver performance
  • Load and torque margin
  • Mechanical transmission
  • Thermal conditions
  • Position feedback requirements

A smaller step angle does not automatically mean a more accurate machine.
